Town of Normal council member Chemberly Cummings issued a call for student participants, college-age mentors and adult volunteers and liaisons for Youth on A Mission Council. The deadline for applicants is Sept. 27. Applications are available via the Town of Normal website

Youth on A Mission (YAM) is a youth advisory council for high school students designed to engage youth, provide leadership growth and an opportunity to learn about municipal government.

“Students will engage in community service activities, lobbying sessions and strategic planning,” explains Cummings. “This council provides the opportunity to learn about local government and work directly with local elected officials. It is important for elected leaders and young leaders to interact and work together to address local issues.”

The program will run through eight sessions from October through April. The goal is to have students attend Lobby Day in Springfield, Ill., and close the program year with an award ceremony and celebration.

Student Participants

Students from Normal Community High School, Normal Community West High School and University High School are eligible to apply and participate at no cost. Students must have at least 2.25 GPA or higher to participate.

In lieu of paying for the program, participants are asked to:

  • Attend every session and be actively engaged. Participants cannot miss more than two sessions.
  • Agree to participate in the YAM fundraiser.

Those interested should apply online by Sept. 27. To be accepted into the program, participants must:

  • complete each form and obtain signatures from a parent/guardian
  • provide a letter of recommendation
  • submit the application and letter of recommendation by the deadline

Mentors & Advisors

The program also seeks participants for program volunteers, mentors and high school liaisons. Volunteers will support students and assist with the sessions. Mentors are sought from Illinois State University, Illinois Wesleyan University and Heartland Community College to chaperone Lobby day and lead round table discussions. High school liaisons from Normal Community or Normal West High School will assist with recruiting students. All volunteers, mentors and high school liaisons must pass a background check. To apply, complete this application.
